End of Life Care

Providing comfort, compassion, and dignity in your pet's final moments.
End-of-life (EOL) care is the critical final stage in a pet’s life. At Geneseo Veterinary Care our focus for end of life is to maximize patient comfort and minimize suffering while providing a collaborative and supportive partnership with the caregiver client.
Whether you choose to come to our hospital or schedule a home visit, Dr. Lauren is committed to walking through the end stages with you. She will perform a quality-of-life evaluation so that the best decisions can be made for your elderly or critically ill pet. You can expect a thorough examination, review of your pet's history, as well as environmental consideration.

If humane euthanasia is deemed appropriate, the doctor will administer medications to ensure that your pet's final moments are as peaceful as possible.
Quality of Life Evaluation
We understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult decisions a family can face. That's why we require a Quality of Life Evaluation with Dr. Lauren prior to performing euthanasia. This consultation allows her to thoroughly assess you pet's overall health, comfort, and quality of life, ensuring that all options have been considered and that the decision is being made with compassion, clarity, and medical guidance.
We understand the deep bond you share with your pets. In times of loss, we offer additional resources for grieving, helping you navigate through the difficult emotions. Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine provides excellent resources to help you through the grieving process.
Euthanasia Process
When you arrive, you'll be given the time and space you need to say your goodbyes. Dr. Lauren will administer a sedative to help your pet relax and fall into a calm, gentle sleep. Once your pet is resting peacefully, the doctor will administer a carefully dosed medication that allows the heart to slow and stop within moments, without pain or distress. Our goal is to provide a peaceful, loving goodbye, surrounded by care and understanding.
For pet owners seeking closure, we provide cremation and burial options. Choose the best way to honor your beloved companion and cherish the memories you shared. We work directly with Pets at Peace by Harris Funeral Home, but have a list of other trusted providers here.
